Involved in the Community

Community Volunteering an Oldham Park

Today students from the college volunteered in Copster Park, Tree planting, Holly planting and litter picking. Students were taught how to plant the trees and holly correctly by the Steet Scene and Park department fromt Oldham Council, who supported the students in this project - which is a part of The Oldham College, Green Week.
The Students got stuck in and had a little fun whilst planting and picking!

The Students were from a variety of courses and were able to sign up through the Student Participation Team in the Green Room. We shall be looking at taking a small group (as there are less trees) out to plant some more trees in another location before the end of March. If you can interested in getting involved in more activities like this please email kayleigh-marie.collier@oldham.ac.uk or call into The Green Room and chat to the staff about the opportunities

Attendance & Punctuality

Start on Time - Be on Time
Mo with two of the lucky winners
Well a great start to the attendance competition in its first month.
We had well over 400 students who were dedicated enough to come in on time, early and ready for their lessons. There were many possible winners for the prize at the end of the month of January but we could only have four winners one from each directorate. They all had their picture taken as to show their achievement of a 100% attendance, hope to have many more people trying their best to improve their attendance and be in chance of winning the prize for this month.
A big well done to Lucy Gilbert from Creative Industries, Zenab Kayani-Deane from Enterprise and New Technologies, Ayesha Mukhter from Care, Leisure and Professional Services and last but not least Abdullahi Yusuf from Foundation Learning and Learner Entitlement.
Congratulations and keep early and on time J

Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January 2012

On Holocaust Memorial Day 2012, people across the world will be choosing to make their voice heard by taking inspiration from the past. As part of your action for Speak Up, Speak Out you can make a pledge to challenge the language of hatred and commit to using words which reflect respect for the dignity of those around you.

The Pledge was made available in the Green Room, students and staffs were informed about the pledge through the all announcement system and emails. The pledge was made available from the Friday 27th January – Friday 10th February 2012.

The display consisted of Flowers and Candle display with the message ‘If you were to hold a minutes silence for every victim of the Holocaust you would have to remain silent for at least 3 years’.

Student Union President Mo, Signing the Pledge
A table for the pledge and a paper based version of the PowerPoint of the visit to Auschwitz, Poland, that two students experienced.

Luggage tags were hung detailing some the victims information that there are records for, the information included                        -Name, place of birth, age, place of death and if possible the year.

There was a PowerPoint presentation that showed the experience of the two students that visited Poland, Auschwitz.

The information was left up for students to see for a week and students asked about the memorial and the pictures that they had seen. The Memorial also coincided with two Saturday Skills days were parents received a presentation in the Green Room,  parents saw the memorial and some parents signed the pledge too. The pledges were sent to Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

It was an excellent night with three performance's from the Creative Industries department which included the Musical Theatre Students and Dance Students 1st & 2nd years, who closed the show with an exciting performance.

All of the staging, lighting, filming and pyrotechnics were run perfectly by students from the Creative Industries department. The whole night was an excellent for students to show parents and other guest what they have learnt and can do from the time at the college.

Mo and myself attended the evening, Mo as the Student Union President gave a vote of thanks, which meant he had to stand on the stand and address the audience - he was great. I made an appearance handing the Deputy Mayor and Youth Mayor some beautiful flowers in thanks for attending and presenting in the evening. It was a great event to attend and it was lovely to see students gain their awards with their parents and friend watching.
